Growing Into Your Authentic Self

A Quiet Place to Begin
There can be a lot of pressure, especially during the teen years, to figure out who you are.
You might feel like you’re supposed to have answers.
What you like.
Who you are.
Where you fit.
But most people don’t feel that clear, even if it looks like they do.
Sometimes things feel uncertain.
Sometimes they change.
Sometimes what felt right before doesn’t feel the same anymore.
That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.
Growing into your authentic self doesn’t usually happen all at once.
It often happens quietly, in small moments, as you begin to notice what feels true for you right now.
You don’t have to decide anything today.
You don’t have to prove anything.
Just being here, noticing, is enough.
What “Being Yourself” Actually Means
You might hear people say, “just be yourself,” but that can feel confusing.
What does that even mean?
Being your authentic self doesn’t mean having everything figured out.
It doesn’t mean being confident all the time.
It doesn’t mean staying the same forever.
Sometimes it simply means being honest with yourself, even in small ways.
Noticing:
what feels comfortable
what feels off
what feels easy, or natural, or real
And sometimes, those things change.
That’s part of it too.
Growing into your authentic self is not about becoming one fixed version of you.
It’s about allowing yourself to keep growing, shifting, and discovering what feels true over time.
How the Earth Grows Without Rushing
If you look at the Earth in spring, nothing is trying to grow all at once.
Some plants are just beginning.
Some are already blooming.
Some are still resting beneath the surface.
There’s no comparison.
No rush.
No moment where everything has to be fully formed.
Growth happens at different times, in different ways.
You are allowed to be like that too.
You don’t have to know who you are all at once.
You don’t have to catch up to anyone else.
Growing into your authentic self can be slow, uneven, and quiet… just like the Earth.

A Small Earthside Pause
(optional, only if it feels comfortable)
If it feels okay, you might take a few minutes to step outside.
You don’t need to do anything special.
You don’t need to clear your mind or focus perfectly.
Just notice:
something you can see around you
something you can hear
something that feels steady or calm
You might also notice something small that feels like you.
Not something big or important.
Just something simple.
A color you like.
A place that feels comfortable.
A moment that feels a little easier to be in.
There’s no right answer here.
Just noticing is enough.
When Being Yourself Feels Hard
Sometimes, being yourself doesn’t feel simple at all.
It can feel easier to blend in.
To stay quiet.
To go along with what other people expect.
And sometimes, the world itself can feel like a lot.
You might notice that in your body, even if you don’t fully understand why.
A sense of tension.
Restlessness.
Or just feeling a little overwhelmed.
That doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.
It means you’re responding to what you’re experiencing, and that’s a normal human thing to do.
You’re allowed to take your time.
You’re allowed to keep parts of yourself private.
You don’t have to share everything to be real.
If things feel heavy, it can help to step outside for a few minutes.
To walk.
To sit somewhere quiet.
To let your attention rest on something steady, like the ground, the air, or the way light moves through the trees.
You don’t have to fix anything.
You don’t have to figure anything out.
Sometimes, just being in a place that isn’t asking anything from you can help your body settle a little.
You Don’t Have to Become Someone New
You don’t need to turn into a different version of yourself to belong.
Growing into your authentic self isn’t about changing everything.
It’s about slowly noticing what already feels true and allowing more space for it.
Some days that might feel clear.
Some days it might not.
Both are okay.
This month, you might simply notice:
what feels a little more like you
what feels a little less like you
where you feel more at ease
That’s already enough.
You are allowed to grow at your own pace.
The Earth does.
Earthside is a quiet space for reflection. You don’t need to share or respond here. If something you’re feeling feels too heavy to carry alone, reaching out to a trusted adult can help.
